I was standing with my sign that said ‘I love caring for the elderly and the programs that support them’. I saw a couple that looked to be in their late 70s walking down the street looking at some of the other signs with a look on their faces that gave the indication they were eager to get past all of us. When they got to me, the gentleman stopped as he read my sign, pointed at it, and said “Yes, that’s exactly what we need them to be doing!” I smiled at him and said “Yes, exactly!”. He smiled at me, nodded, and they continued walking down the road. That was the extent of our interaction, yet I had the feeling that a connection was made that would not have happened if my sign had said ‘No cuts to Medicare’ or something like that. Who knows what impact it had on him, but for me it was a moment of proof that we can find common ground!
